Shootout in Lahore: 8 Sri Lankan cricketers hurt
Lahore: An official says eight members of Sri Lanka's national cricket team have been wounded after gunmen opened fire on their vehicle in eastern Pakistan.
Pakistan Cricket Board security official Nadeem Iqbal said the team members were hurt on Tuesday near the stadium where they were due to arrive to play the fifth day of the second cricket Test match against the hosts.
Sri Lankan team manager Brendon Kruppu confirmed the incident and said the team's wicketkeeper batsman, Kumar Sangakkara, was among the injured. Ajanth Mendis, Thilan Samaraweera and Tharanga Paranavithana were among those listed as wounded.
Security concerns have plagued Pakistan for years and some foreign sports teams including India have refused to play here.
Five policemen were killed when gunmen attacked the bus of the Sri Lankan cricket team as it was on its way to the Gaddafi stadium here for the second cricket Test against Pakistan, media reports said.
Sri Lanka has cancelled the tour.
TV channel DAWN NEWS reported that four policemen escorting the team bus were shot dead in the attack in which grenades were also lobbed.
Geo TV added that the gunmen opened fire on the cavalcade at the Liberty crossing on the way to the stadium for Sri Lankans were touring Pakistan after India pulled out with security concerns following the 26/11 attack on Mumbai.
